The 2026 Giro d’Italia Grande Partenza in Bulgaria delivered exactly the kind of nervous, high-speed chaos we expected, but the pure wattage monsters did not survive to contest the finish. After a tense, heavily controlled opening stage into Burgas, absolute disaster struck the peloton with just 600 meters to go. A massive crash completely decimated the field, instantly wiping out the heavy-hitting pre-race favorites and leaving only a dozen riders upright to fight for the uphill drag to the line.

Because Soudal Quick-Step had the foresight to move their train to the very front of the bunch with six kilometers remaining, they completely bypassed the carnage. The veteran lead-out duo of Jasper Stuyven and Dries Van Gestel flawlessly delivered 22-year-old French phenom Paul Magnier to the 175-meter mark. Magnier launched a crushing sprint to easily overpower the remaining survivors, securing the biggest victory of his career. The young star now simultaneously holds the pink, cyclamen, and white jerseys, while the rest of the peloton will spend their evening painfully assessing their road rash.
