Team Visma Lease a Bike set a goal to win a stage while wearing the pink jersey during the final week of the Giro d’Italia. Rather than waiting for a dramatic late-race opportunity, they simply executed the plan on Tuesday. Stage 16 from Bellinzona to Carì was a masterclass in suffocation. Visma kept a five-man breakaway on a tight leash all afternoon, relying on Timo Kielich, Tim Rex, and Bart Lemmen to control the pace before Victor Campenaerts shredded the surviving peloton on the final climb.
With just over six kilometers remaining on the ascent to Carì, Jonas Vingegaard launched his inevitable attack. He easily rode away from the rest of the General Classification contenders, crossing the finish line over a minute ahead of his closest rivals. The dominant solo effort earned Vingegaard his fourth stage victory of this year’s Giro, marking the first time in his career he has won four stages in a single Grand Tour.
The victory further cements Vingegaard’s iron grip on the maglia rosa, while Visma teammate Davide Piganzoli quietly moved up to eighth overall. The peloton faces another brutal 202-kilometer mountain stage to Andalo tomorrow, and at this point, the rest of the field is clearly just racing for second place.
