The opening stage of the Giro d’Italia Women was supposed to be a straightforward sprint into Ravenna, but the UCI jobsworths had other plans. In a stunning post-race twist, original stage winner Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) was disqualified and expelled from the race after her bike failed to meet the UCI’s minimum weight requirements.

The disqualification retroactively handed the stage victory and the first maglia rosa of the race to Lidl-Trek’s Elisa Balsamo, who had crossed the line just behind the powerful Dutch sprinter.

Wiebes’ swift exit from the results sheets came down to a breach of UCI article 2.12.007–2.2: utilizing a bicycle that fails to comply with official regulations. In this case, the team mechanics flew too close to the sun, sending their star sprinter out on a machine that sat below the mandatory 6.8kg weight limit. While carbon layups and lightweight custom components are the obsession of every modern weight-weenie, dropping below the legal threshold remains professional cycling’s cardinal sin.

The jury didn’t hesitate, stripping Wiebes of her win and altering the trajectory of the race’s opening stages.

For Balsamo, inheriting the leader’s jersey via a technicality isn’t the romantic victory most riders dream of, but she isn’t turning down the hardware. The former world champion acknowledged the bizarre circumstances but emphasized that it remains a massive honor to pull on the pink jersey as the race heads into its second day.
