In Tuesday’s Stage 4 mountain time trial, Anna van der Breggen covered the 12.7-kilometer course 1 minute and 3 seconds faster than reigning world time trial champion Marlen Reusser. The performance strips the pink jersey off Elisa Balsamo’s shoulders and puts van der Breggen firmly in control of the race.

This marks her fifth career stage victory at the Giro d’Italia, arriving exactly five years after her last overall victory at the Italian Grand Tour. Taking the lead provides a needed morale boost for a team that has faced a string of setbacks this week, including Lorena Wiebes, who was disqualified on Stage 1.

Tomorrow’s stage serves up a long day of climbing capped off with a technical descent. With rain in the forecast, AVDB acknowledged that holding onto the overall lead is going to be a difficult challenge for the squad as they navigate the weather and the terrain.
