Isaac Del Toro completed an impressive double in the high mountains, staging a final-day coup on the slopes of the Plateau de Solaison to snatch the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes title. The 22-year-old Mexican phenom started the final weekend looking down and out after a Stage 6 breakaway reshaped the general classification and left him more than a minute down. But back-to-back mountain victories proved that world-class climbing depth always trumps early-week survival tactics.
The short finale packed four categorized peaks and over 4,000 meters of elevation gain into 120 kilometers. The Plateau de Solaison is one of the most unforgiving, relentless ascents in European cycling, and it served as the backdrop for Del Toro’s final acceleration. Following an injection of pace from teammate Pablo Torres on the lower ramps, the Mexican launched.
Just as he had done on the Grand Colombier 24 hours prior, Del Toro detached himself from his general classification rivals. He quickly opened a yawning chasm on the steep upper gradients, riding the final kilometers alone to the summit to secure both the stage glory and the overall win.
Tuckwell, who fought valiantly all week to protect his breakout lead, hit his limit on the alpine terrain. The young Australian crossed the summit to salvage second place on the final podium at 54 seconds back, while Lidl-Trek’s Juan Ayuso took third overall at 1:17 after chasing Del Toro home a full minute later on the stage.
The emphatic turnaround cements Del Toro’s status as a bona fide corporate nightmare for his rivals ahead of July. The Tour Auvergne title adds to a ridiculous 2026 trophy cabinet that already features overall victories at Tirreno-Adriatico and the UAE Tour. More importantly, conquering the traditional, high-altitude proving ground of the Dauphiné region lays down an ominous marker just weeks before his highly anticipated Tour de France debut.
“We came into the final weekend believing we could still fight,” Del Toro said at the summit. “The team was incredible on the final climb. The Tour de France will be something completely new for me, but this result shows that we are moving in the right direction”. If this week was any indication of that direction, the establishment should be very nervous.
