The second stage of the 2026 Tour de France ended in fireworks as UAE Team Emirates-XRG turned the Barcelona circuits into their personal playground. The 168.5-kilometer route from Tarragona packed 2,500 meters of elevation and three trips up the steep ramps of Montjuïc. The heat and gradients punished the peloton, but it was Mexican debutant Isaac Del Toro who stole the show.

Del Toro suffered a mechanical 60 kilometers out, getting overlooked by his team car and having to weave his way back through the convoy. Yet, by the time the race hit the final circuit, the 22-year-old was at the sharp end. When Mattias Skjelmose launched a late attack inside the final two kilometers, Del Toro dragged him back and then transitioned into a lead-out effort for Tadej Pogačar.

The pace was so devastating that yellow jersey wearer Jonas Vingegaard slipped from their wheel. Pogačar looked back, assessed the damage, and let his young teammate ride ahead to take the biggest win of his career. The Slovenian crossed second to seal the 1-2 finish, slapping Del Toro on the back in a massive display of team dominance.

Remco Evenepoel and Vingegaard followed them home to take third and fourth on the day. Vingegaard retains his overall lead, but Visma | Lease a Bike now faces a headache. If Pogačar can afford to hand out Tour de France stage wins to his domestiques this early in the race, the looming mountain stages are going to be a war zone.
