The cycling world is mourning the tragic and sudden loss of 30-year-old Colombian rider Cristian Camilo Muñoz, who passed away on Friday morning due to severe medical complications following a race crash.

Muñoz, riding for the Nu Colombia squad, crashed last Saturday at the Tour du Jura in France, where he sustained an injury to his left knee. He received initial treatment at a local medical center before traveling with his team to Spain for the Vuelta Asturias.

On Tuesday, Muñoz was examined again at a clinic in Valladolid, where medical staff detected a difficult-to-treat infection in the knee. He was admitted to the hospital for specialist care, but his condition rapidly deteriorated overnight, and he tragically passed away on Friday.

Nu Colombia confirmed the devastating news in a statement, immediately withdrawing the entire team from the Vuelta Asturias to mourn their teammate.

“Today we bid farewell to Cristian Muñoz, a cyclist who turned every kilometre into a show of passion, discipline and heart,” the team wrote in a tribute. “His story doesn’t stay here and reminds us that dreams are pedalled every day, even when the road heads uphill. We are left with his example, the goals he achieved, and the inspiration he instilled in everyone who saw him race.”

Muñoz had been a professional since 2017. A highly respected talent, he spent three years racing at the WorldTour level with UAE Team Emirates before returning to his home country in 2022 to ride for domestic Colombian teams, eventually joining Nu Colombia in 2024.

Race organizers at the Vuelta Asturias held a minute of silence ahead of Friday’s stage in his honor, with the race director’s vehicle displaying a black ribbon.

Cyclry extends its deepest condolences to Cristian’s family, friends, and the entire Nu Colombia team during this incredibly difficult time.
