Tragedy struck the international cycling community this week following the devastating news that 16-year-old Irish rider Shane O’Brien was killed in a training accident in County Waterford. The young rider, who competed for CAMS Majco, collided with a parked truck while training on his time trial bike on Tuesday morning and was pronounced dead at the scene. O’Brien was widely regarded as a rising talent within the junior ranks, having recently secured a tenth-place finish in the young rider classification at the Côte d’Or Classic in France.
The tragic news immediately reached the peloton of the ongoing Giro Next Gen in Italy, where Shane’s older brother, Liam O’Brien, was competing. Liam, a prominent rider for the Lidl-Trek Future Racing development squad, immediately withdrew from the race to return home to his family in Ireland. Lidl-Trek General Manager Luca Guercilena confirmed the departure, expressing deep condolences on behalf of the team organization as the global cycling community rallies to support the O’Brien family.
