After a Bulgarian opening weekend, the peloton touched down on Italian soil for a 138-kilometer reminder of why we love this sport. Stage 4 from Catanzaro to Cosenza was a glut of technical corners and ambition, with a big hill in it for good measure.
With two kilometers remaining, Swiss prodigy Jan Christen launched a sharp acceleration that forced the General Classification heavyweights into a defensive panic. It was a textbook “softening up” move that left the favorites legless just as the real fight began.
While the bunch scrambled to cover Christen, Narváez sat in the wheels, waited for the right moment, and launched his own counter-acceleration. He carved through the final corner and beat out Orluis Aular (Movistar) and Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) in the sprint.
While Narváez takes the glory and the podium champagne, the General Classification has undergone its first major reshuffle. Giulio Ciccone’s third-place finish was enough to propel him into the maglia rosa. He’ll lead the race into Stage 5, but he has Jan Christen breathing down his neck. The young Swiss rider’s late-race heroics earned him the white jersey and moved him into second overall, trailing the lead by four seconds.
