Report

Wout van Aert has impressively won the fifth stage of the Tour de France. A day after Primoz Roglic’s victory, the winner of Milan-Sanremo on the sloping finish lane in Privas was the fastest in the bunch sprint. Van Aert positioned himself well in the wheel of Cees Bol, after which he finished sovereignly.

After his victory in Albi last year, it is his second stage victory in the Tour de France and his fifth victory of the season. Earlier this year, in addition to Milan-Sanremo, he also won Strade Bianche, the Belgian time trial championships and a stage in the Criterium du Dauphiné. It is the sixteenth victory of Team Jumbo-Visma in 2020.

“This is a very nice victory,” said Van Aert. “I am extremely grateful to the team that I got the chance to go for my own chance today. I am more than happy that I can reward my confidence with the stage victory. I might have a chance and I’ll take it. This is really beautiful. It was a fairly easy stage, but the finish was still quite difficult. Because there was no leading group during the stage and the pace was not too high, a lot of men were still fresh. Because of the fast last hour and the wind, it got quite hectic at the end. I knew the stage was perfect for me. It was important to choose position. I was actually perfectly in the leadout of Team Sunweb. I started my sprint when Bol entered. It was still very close, but a few centimeters is enough. I’ve got my victory now so from tomorrow I will work for Primoz and Tom again. That will be with great pleasure and pleasure.
