2023 Giro d’Italia Stage 16 | Highlights
Report
Joao Almeida and UAE Team Emirates showcased remarkable teamwork during stage 16 of the Giro d’Italia, delivering an exhilarating performance on the grueling Monte Bondone summit finish. Almeida, the talented 24-year-old Portuguese champion, secured his maiden Giro stage victory with the invaluable support of his teammates, Davide Formolo and Jay Vine, who relentlessly applied pressure on their rivals throughout the final climb.
Notably, Diego Ulissi made a significant contribution by sacrificing his position in the breakaway to lead a powerful charge at the front of a fatigued peloton. Seizing the opportunity to exploit weaknesses in his opponents, Almeida made a bold move with -7km remaining, with only Geraint Thomas from Ineos-Grenadiers able to match his pace. Working in tandem, the duo collaborated until the finish line, where Almeida summoned a final burst of energy, overtaking Thomas in a thrilling sprint. This triumph not only marked UAE Team Emirates’ third stage win of the Giro but also their 28th victory of the season.
Overwhelmed with joy, Almeida described the achievement as a dream come true. Having narrowly missed out on stage wins in the past, he expressed gratitude to his team, family, girlfriend, and supporters. Recognizing the immense difficulty of the stage, Almeida acknowledged the risks he took and the rewards they brought, emphasizing the extraordinary effort exerted by his teammates.
As a result of his remarkable performance, Almeida ascended to second place in the overall general classification, trailing race leader Geraint Thomas. Furthermore, he continued to lead the white jersey classification, further solidifying his position as a prominent contender.
The Giro resumes on Wednesday with a flat stage spanning 197km from Pergine Valsugana to Caorle, specifically tailored for the sprinters to showcase their speed and skills.
