2024 Tirreno-Adriatico Stage Six | Highlights

Race Report

Jonas Vingegaard continued his impressive performance in Tirreno-Adriatico, asserting his dominance in the queen stage of the race. The 27-year-old Danish cyclist once again proved to be a formidable force, showcasing his strength and skill on the challenging final climb of Monte Petrano. With only the final sprint stage remaining, Vingegaard’s overall victory in the Race of the Two Seas appears imminent.

During the penultimate stage, riders confronted a grueling course with 3,500 meters of elevation gain, culminating in the formidable ascent of Monte Petrano. A breakaway of nine strong riders formed early in the stage, but Team Visma | Lease a Bike, supporting GC leader Vingegaard, maintained control in the peloton to keep the gap manageable. As the race approached the decisive final climb, the escapees were reeled in by the group of favorites.

In a battle of attrition on Monte Petrano, Vingegaard, Juan Ayuso, and Jai Hindley emerged as the standout riders. After several attempts to break away, it was Vingegaard who ultimately seized the initiative, launching a decisive attack with five kilometers remaining. Methodically extending his lead, Vingegaard powered his way to the finish line solo, securing his second consecutive stage win.

Reflecting on his victory, Vingegaard credited his team for their exceptional support, positioning him well for the crucial final climb. Despite the relentless pace set by Bora – Hansgrohe, Vingegaard remained unfazed, ultimately capitalizing on his opportunity to break away and claim victory.

With two stage wins under his belt, Vingegaard hailed the week as “perfect” for the team, expressing satisfaction with his form and performance throughout the race. Looking ahead to the final stage, Vingegaard emphasized the importance of safely reaching the finish line to secure the overall victory.

With Vingegaard’s triumph, Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s tally of victories in 2024 reached an impressive 13. As anticipation builds for the flat final stage in San Benedetto del Tronto, Vingegaard stands poised to add another accolade to his already remarkable performance in Tirreno-Adriatico.
