Report
Tim Merlier showcased his sprinting prowess once again at the UAE Tour, securing his fourth victory of the season in Dubai. The 31-year-old Belgian rider made history by becoming the first cyclist to claim back-to-back bunch sprint victories in a single edition of the race, further solidifying his reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the sprint finishes.
The stage started off quietly, with the peloton maintaining a steady pace until the final ten kilometers. As the sprinter teams began positioning themselves for the finale, Ayco Bastiaens diligently controlled the gap to the early breakaway, while Ilan van Wilder and Mauri Vansevenant contributed to the relentless pace-setting efforts in the closing stages.
With five kilometers to go, Jordi Warlop and Bert Van Lerberghe executed flawless lead-out work, ensuring that Merlier was perfectly positioned for the final sprint. Negotiating a tricky corner with 750 meters remaining, Merlier remained calm and patient, waiting for the opportune moment to unleash his explosive acceleration.
Crossing the line in commanding fashion, Merlier secured his fourth victory at the UAE Tour and added to his impressive tally of wins in the Soudal Quick-Step jersey. Reflecting on his triumph, Merlier expressed his delight: “Today was a slow pace the whole stage, but in the end it became hectic. The team put me in a good position, and I waited for the last 500 meters before deciding to change the speed and make my move. Getting two victories gives me a great feeling.”
Looking ahead to the remaining stages, Merlier remained determined to continue his winning streak. “I would love to add at least another one,” he remarked, acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead. “Although I know it will be difficult, I am looking forward to the next two days.” With Merlier’s exceptional form and the unwavering support of his team, the cycling world eagerly anticipates his continued success at the UAE Tour.
