A Filippo Ganna time trial win was practically written into the roadbook. He delivered. The Italian champion averaged a 54.9 kph, passing seven different riders who started ahead of him before crossing the line in 45:53. That’s the fastest 40+km long ITT ever, for what it’s worth.
Ganna’s display put him almost two full minutes ahead of second place. Netcompany Ineos secured a 1-2 finish on the day, with their GC hopeful Thymen Arensman edging out Groupama-FDJ United’s Rémi Cavagna for the runner-up spot.
Ganna noted after the finish how happy he was to finally get a time trial that didn’t feature a random mountain shoved into the middle of it. When the route is entirely flat, the big man is untouchable.
In the GC contest, Afonso Eulálio (Bahrain Victorious) only lost 1:57 to Jonas Vingegaard, retaining the race lead by 27 seconds. Vingegaard himself finished way off the pace, 13th on the stage with a time of 48:53. He was three minutes slower than Ganna, and also lost time to Arensman, Derek Gee-West, and Ben O’Connor.
Decathlon CMA CGM’s Felix Gall hemorrhaged time, while the Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe duo of Giulio Pellizzari and Jai Hindley limped through the course.
