Race Report
March 6, 2024, will forever be etched in the annals of cycling history as a watershed moment for Team Bahrain Victorious. The squad achieved an extraordinary feat by clinching victory in both of the day’s prestigious World Tour stage races. Santiago Buitrago initiated the triumph with a stunning solo performance at stage 4 of Paris-Nice, swiftly followed by Phil Bauhaus’s triumphant sprint to glory at Tirreno-Adriatico.
Bauhaus returned to the winner’s circle with authority, emerging victorious on stage 3 of Tirreno-Adriatico, covering 220km from Volterra to Gualdo Tadino. Despite the daunting terrain and inclement weather conditions, Bauhaus demonstrated his sprinting prowess, navigating through challenging hills and an uphill finish to secure his first win of the season. His Bahrain Victorious teammates played a pivotal role, positioning him perfectly for the final sprint, where he outclassed his competitors with a powerful surge to the finish line.
Reflecting on his long-awaited victory, Bauhaus expressed his gratitude to his teammates and the team’s meticulous planning. “I’m thrilled to secure my first win of the year, especially after more than a year since my last victory at the Tour Down Under in 2023,” said Bauhaus. “Today’s stage was particularly challenging for sprinters, but the unwavering belief and support from my team fueled my motivation. Our strategic planning, including our approach to nutrition and energy management, proved instrumental in securing the win. I owe this victory to my teammates, whose unwavering support and confidence never wavered.”
Team Bahrain Victorious Sports Director Gorazd Stangelj hailed Bauhaus’s exceptional performance and the team’s flawless execution of the race plan. “Winning a stage in a prestigious race like Tirreno is always a remarkable achievement, and today’s victory was especially sweet given the challenging conditions,” said Stangelj. “Phil was our designated rider for the day, but the entire team rallied together to execute our plan flawlessly. With three riders finishing in the top ten, including Damiano Caruso and Nikias Arndt, our team showcased exceptional teamwork and determination. I couldn’t be prouder of our boys.”
Meanwhile, in France, Santiago Buitrago scripted his own tale of triumph at Paris-Nice, conquering the daunting Mont Brouilly summit finish in style. Battling through adverse weather conditions and challenging terrain, Buitrago’s relentless determination and tactical acumen propelled him to victory. With his Bahrain Victorious teammates providing crucial support throughout the grueling stage, Buitrago seized the opportunity to launch a decisive attack, ultimately clinching victory in spectacular fashion.
Buitrago, reflecting on his memorable victory, credited his teammates for their unwavering support and dedication. “Today is a very special day for me, and I’m immensely grateful for the support of my teammates and the entire Bahrain Victorious family,” said Buitrago. “Their belief in me never wavered, and it gave me the confidence to pursue victory. The challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions made for a tough race, but we remained focused and determined. I’m proud to have played a role in securing this historic double victory for our team.”
Team Bahrain Victorious’ Performance Manager, Vladimir Miholjević, hailed the team’s historic achievement as a testament to their hard work and dedication. “Today’s double victory in two of the most prestigious races of the year is a dream come true for our team,” said Miholjević. “We meticulously prepared for these races, and our riders executed our race strategy to perfection. Winning two completely different types of stages with two different types of riders showcases our team’s versatility and strength. I’m incredibly proud of our riders and grateful for their dedication.”
As celebrations ensued, both Bauhaus and Buitrago paid tribute to the late Gino Mäder, a beloved teammate whose memory continues to inspire the team. “This victory is a testament to the collective effort of our team, staff, and everyone at TBV whose dedication makes moments like this possible,” said Bauhaus. “Gino is with us every step of the way, and we ride in his honor.”
