2024 Giro d’Italia Stage 5 | Highlights
Report
What an amazing win! Today, the rider from Cofidis, who splits his time between France and Italy, secures the team’s first win of the season. With his cool-headedness, determination, and smart positioning, he managed to join the right breakaway and then powered to victory in an impressive sprint, leaving his breakaway companions behind.
It’s a fantastic victory! This Wednesday, a public holiday in France, many cycling fans spent the afternoon glued to the Giro d’Italia. And they weren’t disappointed: viewers witnessed a stage full of twists and turns, with a Frenchman, Benjamin Thomas, emerging victorious in a fierce battle of tactics.
“It was truly incredible!”
A five-time world champion in track cycling, Benjamin Thomas showcased his immense talent. Before him, there were attempts by Simon Geschke and Harison Wood during this stage. But Benjamin sensed the right moment to make his move, successfully staying ahead of the chasing peloton with his breakaway companions. “It’s absolutely incredible,” said his teammate Thomas Champion. “We’ve been waiting for a win for so long!” “It’s just unbelievable,” added Harison Wood.
Benjamin lived up to his ambitions and demonstrated his talent in the last fifty kilometers. He took turns leading the breakaway and showed remarkable tactical nous and speed in the sprint. This victory marks the 10th of his career, his first in a grand tour, and undoubtedly his most prestigious to date.
Benjamin hadn’t tasted victory since the Four Days of Dunkirk last year. Today, he also gives Cofidis its first win of the season. Often in good positions but never fully rewarded, the riders of the northern team and the entire staff never gave up hope. Finally, their efforts are rewarded, and tonight they can celebrate.
Reactions in the heat of the moment:
Benjamin Thomas: “It was a really long race! We had an incredible breakaway. The finale was tough, but we gave it our all. About ten kilometers from the finish, we had a slight advantage over the peloton, and I sensed an opportunity. I came close in Carcassonne at the Tour de France two years ago, and today, I felt it might be my day! Knowing the final stretch helped me. I’m thrilled to win here in Italy.”
Roberto Damiani (sports director): “It’s a real team effort. This victory feels amazing! Simon (Greschke) was part of the breakaway initially, and then we rode together until the intermediate sprint. Benjamin made his move after that, and although the peloton hesitated, our breakaway managed to hold on. He managed the finale perfectly before sealing the win. We’re really happy and satisfied; we’ve worked hard for this result, believing in it and giving our all since the start of the season. Benjamin embodies the spirit of the team, and we know he puts in a lot of effort both on the track and on the road. Today, we’ve achieved something truly special!”
