Jonathan Milan of Lidl-Trek celebrated his second stage victory at the Giro d’Italia, becoming the first sprinter in this edition of La Corsa Rosa to achieve this feat. Milan’s triumph on Stage 11 coincided with the launch of the brand-new SRAM RED AXS groupset, which has been utilized by the Lidl-Trek team throughout the Giro.
Milan’s road to victory began with the diligent work of his teammate, Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier, who led the peloton for miles, setting the stage for a sprint finish. Milan expressed his gratitude to his team, acknowledging their unwavering support and belief in his sprinting abilities.
“I think today is just unbelievable what the guys did for me,” Milan said. “Like always, they are believing in me, and I have to say thanks from the bottom of my heart for this.”
Benefitting from the full support and confidence of his team, Milan positioned himself well during the final kilometers of the stage. Despite momentarily losing his leadout train, Milan remained composed, latching onto the rear wheel of Tim Merlier before making his decisive move in the sprint.
Reflecting on his victory, Milan emphasized the importance of teamwork and learning from past experiences to improve his performance.
“It’s always tricky in the final, how to predict it and how to move,” Milan explained. “In the end, I found myself on Merlier’s wheel, I think it was the perfect wheel.”
Milan’s victory not only extends his lead in the Points Competition but also serves as a testament to his growth and development as a sprinter.
“Today’s victory is a step forward for the ciclamino jersey,” Milan remarked. “I have a good lead at the moment, but I absolutely must not take anything for granted. There are complicated stages coming up, I know I have to be ready where there is a chance to pick up points.”
With Milan’s exceptional performance and unwavering determination, the Lidl-Trek team continues to make its mark on the Giro d’Italia, showcasing the power of teamwork and the pursuit of excellence in professional cycling.
