Alpecin Deceuninck to Compete in GP New York City

On May 19, 2024, the cycling world will witness the inaugural UCI 1.2 men elite pro race, the Gran Premio New York City (GP NYC), set to take place on the same course and day as the 12th annual mass participation race, the Michelob ULTRA GFNY World Championship NYC. This groundbreaking event will see pro cyclists starting 15 minutes ahead of thousands of riders participating in the GFNY race.

The Teams

GP NYC promises to be an electrifying event with 20 teams from over 10 countries participating. Leading the pack will be European Pro Tour teams with extensive Grand Tour experience, alongside Continental Pro teams hailing from the Americas, Europe, and Asia. The lineup will be completed by elite teams receiving wild cards, providing an exciting mix of talent and competition.

Team Alpecin Deceuninck (BEL)

Among the elite teams competing in GP NYC is Belgian powerhouse Alpecin Deceuninck, boasting a young and ambitious lineup. Headlining the team is reigning Under-23 World Champion and Volta a Catalunya stage winner, Axel Laurance from France. Laurance will be supported by Zwift Academy winner Louis Kitzki from Germany, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown with Zwift Academy runner-up Mattia Gaffuri from Team GFNY.

Team owner Philip Roodhooft expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “Racing GP NYC is a unique opportunity for us to showcase our team sponsors outside of Europe. With Axel Laurance leading the charge, we are determined to deliver a top-notch performance.”

GFNY CEO Uli Fluhme echoed the excitement, highlighting Laurance as one of the favorites for the challenging course. “It will take a complete rider to conquer this tough, spring classics style course, and Laurance has what it takes to rise to the occasion,” said Fluhme.

World Premiere Event

GP NYC marks a historic moment in cycling, as it brings together professional and mass participation racing on the same course and day—a format never before seen in the sport. This innovative approach aims to enhance both race fields and leverage existing operations, logistics, and exposure.

The Course

The race will commence on the lower level of the George Washington Bridge, the world’s busiest bridge, with pro cyclists setting off 15 minutes ahead of the amateur riders. The one-loop course spans 85 miles (137 km) with 6,500ft (2000m) of climbing, resembling the challenging terrain of a Belgian spring classic—a test for allrounders.

Riders will traverse picturesque towns, scenic landscapes, and demanding climbs of Bergen County and Rockland County, juxtaposed with the vibrant backdrop of New York City. The race culminates in Fort Lee, NJ, where participants can enjoy post-race festivities and easy access to nearby amenities.
