Chris Froome to join Israel Start-Up Nation next season
INEOS and Israel Start-Up Nation have confirmed that some of the rumors were true: Chris Froome will leave INEOS at the end of the season when his contract expires and move to Israel SUN.
Speculation was abound that Froome would move on from INEOS before the Tour de France in order to be sole leader as he pursues a fifth overall win that would equal the records set by Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, and Miguel Indurain.
That speculation was only half-right. Froome will remain at INEOS for this year’s Tour, before moving on to his new team. But the reasoning was correct: “Chris is understandably keen to have sole team leadership in the next chapter of his career – which is not something we are able to guarantee him at this point. A move away from Team INEOS can give him that certainty.” – Dave Brailsford.
In his decade at Team Sky and INEOS, Froome has won the Tour de France four times, the Giro once, and the Vuelta twice (once by accident), plus the Dauphine three times. It’s clear that, love or hate the sanctimonious INEOS setup and the way they dominate grand tours, Froome is the greatest grand tour rider of his generation and ranks among the pantheon of the sport’s all-time legends.
There’s no word on what this latest move does for Twitter conspiracy theorists, but we’re looking forward to watching them piece it together from pixelated images depicting weight loss, Jiffy bags, injuries, secret unofficial doping suspensions, and that time-trial in which he knocked over a UCI commissaire.
Here’s Israel SUN’s excited announcement, followed by INEOS’s diplomatic farewell:
Welcome to our family, Chris Froome
Team Israel Start-Up Nation is extremely proud to announce that four-time Tour de France winner, Chris Froome, will lead the team, starting next season.
The Israeli team and the legendary champion will sign a long-term contract on August 1st that will see Froome wear ISN’s blue and white until the end of his illustrious career.
“This is an historic moment for ISN, Israel, Israeli sports, our many fans all around the world and, of course, for me personally – a moment of enormous pride”, said the team’s co-owner, Sylvan Adams.
“Chris is the best rider of his generation and will lead our Tour de France and Grand Tour squad. We hope to make history together as Chris pursues further Tour de France and Grand Tour victories, achievements that would make a serious case for Chris to be considered the greatest cyclist of all time.”
Chris Froome commented: “I’m really excited to be joining the ISN family. I look forward to challenging and being challenged by their talent and continuing to strive for the success that I’ve enjoyed up to now. ISN’s impact on the sport is rapidly expanding, and I’m energized to be along for the ride. I feel we can achieve great things together.”
Team Israel Start-Up Nation’s rapid progression from its beginnings as a Continental team to the WorldTour in just five years has now entered its next phase, explained ISN’s Team Manager, Kjell Carlstrom: “We have been looking to strengthen the team for 2021 in several ways, not least of which is to become Grand Tour contenders. With his impressive palmarès, Chris Froome is the perfect leader to mark our arrival as a serious contender for these races, particularly the Tour de France. Chris’ career has been extraordinary, and we believe that he has both the mindset and physical talents to win more Grand Tours with us, while also acting as a mentor to our young talents, helping them succeed.”
“We are committed to building a supportive Grand Tour team around Chris, such that we can make history together, as we compete to be the best, and achieve our principal goal: winning the Tour de France” said Mr. Adams. “I am proud of the road we have travelled, which includes hosting the historic 2018 Giro d’Italia Grande Partenza in Israel, nurturing young Israeli talents, and inspiring a new generation of riders in Israel to take up the sport. With Chris, we will move to new heights at the very top of the sport. I wish to add that I admire Chris not only for his success as a cyclist, but also for how he conducts himself, as a true gentleman, off the bike. Chris will be a great role model for our team.
“So, in Hebrew, “Baruch Haba” – welcome Chris Froome.”
Chris Froome to leave Team INEOS at end of season
Team INEOS confirmed today that they will not be renewing Chris Froome’s contract at the end of this season.Sir Dave Brailsford said: “Chris’s current contract comes to an end in December and we have taken the decision now not to renew it. We are making this announcement earlier than would usually be the case to put an end to recent speculation and allow the Team to focus on the season ahead.
“Chris has been with us from the start. He is a great champion and we have shared many memorable moments over the years but I do believe this is the right decision for the Team and for Chris. Given his achievements in the sport, Chris is understandably keen to have sole team leadership in the next chapter of his career – which is not something we are able to guarantee him at this point. A move away from Team INEOS can give him that certainty. At the same time, it will also give other members of our Team the leadership opportunities they too have earned and are rightly seeking. I am excited about the talent we have right across the Team at the current time and all our collective focus is on preparing for the season ahead. Like everyone across the sport we are all looking forward to the start of racing next month.”
Chris Froome said: “It has been a phenomenal decade with the Team, we have achieved so much together and I will always treasure the memories. I look forward to exciting new challenges as I move into the next phase of my career but in the meantime my focus is on winning a fifth Tour de France with Team INEOS.”
