Remco Evenepoel Exits Giro d’Italia After Testing Positive for COVID-19
In unfortunate news, the first Grand Tour of the season has been delivered a major setback, as Recmo Evenepoel, the 23-year-old Belgian World Champion currently leading the race, has been forced to bid adieu to the Giro d’Italia. The cause? A positive Covid-19 test that was taken as part of the team’s standard protocol before the first rest day.
Remco, who was making his second appearance in the Giro d’Italia, had a commendable start to the race, winning two stages and sporting four pink jerseys. However, due to the positive result, he will be returning home by car on Monday, leaving behind his teammates and staff who have all tested negative for the virus.
“It’s truly disappointing to be leaving the race under such circumstances,” said Remco. “I had a great experience so far and was looking forward to the next two weeks of competition. I’m grateful to my teammates and the staff who made significant sacrifices to prepare for the Giro. I’ll be cheering them on from afar.”
