If you want to experience some of the most dramatic, punishing, and visually stunning cycling terrain in the world, you should absolutely book a trip to Wales. The only catch? You usually have to pack about three layers of Gore-Tex to survive the local microclimates.
But thanks to a new partnership between indoor training platform ROUVY and Threshold Sports, you can now tackle the legendary climbs of the Welsh countryside entirely from the dry, climate-controlled comfort of your own home.
Running now through April 26, the newly launched Virtual RideCymru (pronounced kum-ree, for those of us not fluent in Welsh) brings three spectacular sections of the real-world endurance route straight to your smart trainer via augmented reality.

Beating the Sold-Out Start Line
The real-world RideCymru is a massive, 250-mile, three-day endurance epic that winds through Eryri (Snowdonia), the Cambrian Mountains, and the Brecon Beacons. It is such a bucket-list event that all 200 spots for the September 2026 edition sold out nearly a year in advance.
If you missed out on registration, this virtual challenge is currently your only backdoor into the peloton.
Anyone who completes the Virtual RideCymru challenge during the six-week window will be entered to win £500 worth of Le Col cycling kit, plus a highly coveted, sold-out entry to the actual in-person event this September.
The Virtual Route
If you are looking to break up the monotony of your spring indoor training block, the ROUVY routes offer a brilliant distraction from the usual digital avatars. The challenge is broken down into three highly scenic stages:
- Stage 1 (39.3km): A punchy, hilly route that drags you through the ancient bronze mines around the Great Orne before letting you ride under the imposing battlements of the UNESCO-listed Conwy Castle.
- Stage 2 (30km): A grinding effort in the shadow of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon)—the highest mountain in Wales—followed by a massive virtual descent through deep valleys and ancient woodlands.
- Stage 3 (18.2km): A fast, rolling stage through Coed-Y-Brenin (the King’s forest) straight through the wild heart of the country.
The Tour de France is Watching
This digital showcase comes at a highly strategic time for the Welsh cycling scene. With the Tour de France officially set to pass through Wales in 2027, the nation’s world-class roads are currently sitting squarely in the global spotlight.
As Jack Sargeant, the Wales Minister for Sports, noted today: “With the Tour de France set to pass through Wales in 2027, it’s an exciting time to celebrate Welsh cycling and showcase the incredible roads that make the country such a special place to ride.”
Threshold Sports CEO Nick Tuppen echoed that sentiment, pointing out that cyclists frequently spend thousands of dollars traveling abroad for epic rides when there is world-class terrain sitting right in the UK.
If you want to test your legs on the Welsh gradients without booking a flight or buying a new rain jacket, you can jump into the challenge right now. ROUVY is offering a one-month free membership to anyone who uses the code RIDECYMRU1M at checkout.
