2022 Vuelta a Espana Stage 14 | Highlights

Richard Carapaz (INEOS Grenadiers) put in a dogged performance to seal a dramatic solo victory on Sierra de La Pandera. Carapaz had been part of a 10-rider break before attacking his fellow escapees in the closing kilometres to reduce the size of the group before going solo with 3.5 kilometres remaining.
The Olympic champion was clear of the break, but faced a battle against the chase group behind as Primoz Roglic (Jumbo Visma) attacked from the considerably thinned group of general classification contenders.
With the lead dwindling to seconds from minutes, Carapaz kicked in the final kilometre to hold the chasers off and record his second stage win in three days.
“We knew that today was a very important stage for us, that we could repeat what we did the other day,” said Carapaz. “The truth is that it took a long time to get away, but in the end I was there at the right time. I was able to attack, I went alone and then my breakaway companions joined me.”
The main story was further down the road, however. Roglic’s attack saw him finish alongside Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) just eight seconds behind Carapaz, making up 52 seconds on Remco Evenepoel’s race lead.
Roglic hopes to make up time in the coming days. “It was a beautiful day for us. Sometimes you lose time; sometimes you gain time. Today it was me who gained time. Hopefully I can continue this trend because I’m starting to feel better. My teammates have done a great job and I am happy to be part of this team. Madrid is still a long way to go and we must keep fighting.”
