2023 Giro d’Italia Stage 13 | Highlights

Report

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Einer Rubio, the Colombian cyclist from Movistar Team, emerged triumphant in Crans-Montana during stage 13 of the Giro d’Italia. This momentous achievement allowed him to follow in the footsteps of his compatriot Mauricio Soler, who tasted success in the Tour de Suisse on the same mountain back in 2011, wearing the same team colors.

Einer Rubio’s outstanding performance served as a beacon of hope for the Movistar Team, which had experienced disappointment throughout the 2023 Giro d’Italia. The young Colombian, in his fourth season donning the Blue colors, surpassed formidable adversaries to claim his second victory of the season—marking the team’s 12th triumph in 2023—and secure his inaugural stage win in a Grand Tour, showcasing his remarkable intelligence and strategy.

Hailing from Chíquiza, Rubio positioned himself within an elite group that included Valentin Paret-Peintre (ACT), Derek Gee (IPT), and his main rivals, Jefferson Cepeda (EFE) and Thibaut Pinot (GFC). As the relentless attacks from the seasoned Frenchman tested Rubio’s limits during the decisive 13km ascent, the Colombian tenaciously fought back, ensuring he remained in contention until the final kilometer—his gateway to glory.

With a decisive move, Einer Rubio launched himself forward, triumphantly raising his arms in victory and granting the Abarca Sports organization its 127th stage win in a Grand Tour. This achievement also ended a four-year drought for the Movistar Team, echoing the success of Mauricio Soler. The former member of the Blue squad had claimed a historic victory in the 2011 Tour de Suisse in Crans-Montana, only days before a tragic accident brought an end to his career.

QUOTES / Einer Rubio:

“Today is the day I have longed for tirelessly. I dedicated countless hours preparing for this Giro. The recent challenging weather conditions, particularly yesterday’s rain, posed a significant obstacle for me. However, I remained resolute in my pursuit, constantly searching for an opportunity. And today, I seized that chance. I express my gratitude to God and everyone who supported me—my dream has finally come true.”

“I recognized the formidable strength of Pinot and the threat Cepeda posed. I simply had to bide my time, observe their moves, and patiently wait for the finale. In a few hours, the magnitude of what I have accomplished today will truly sink in. In this moment, my focus was solely on giving my all and pursuing the stage victory. Now that it’s ours, let us relish in this success!”
