2024 Criterium Dauphine Stage 8 | Highlights

Report

The Critérium du Dauphiné served as a perfect prelude to the Tour de France, culminating in a triumphant victory for Primož Roglič. Roglič’s triumph marked his first stage race win of the year and a historic first victory for BORA – hansgrohe at the Dauphiné.

With double stage victories setting the stage, Roglič donned the yellow jersey of the overall winner and claimed the green jersey for the points classification. BORA – hansgrohe’s cohesive performance was further highlighted by their win in the team classification, demonstrating their readiness for the season’s pinnacle event.

“It’s crazy to win the Dauphiné,” Roglič remarked. “I started the day with a gap and was able to play a bit, but in the end, I had to go all in for the win. I was suffering from the efforts of the last three days. It was close, but it worked out in my favor. I want to really enjoy this moment because you don’t win races like this every day.”

The final stage featured another grueling mountain-top finish. After 160 kilometers, the race concluded at the Plateau des Glières. BORA – hansgrohe, with Roglič in the yellow jersey, took command of the peloton, controlling a large breakaway throughout the day. The tension escalated with 5 kilometers to go as Carlos Rodriguez launched an attack, breaking clear from Roglič, second-placed Matteo Jorgenson, and third-placed Derek Gee. Rodriguez fought for the stage win, while Jorgenson and Roglič vied for the yellow jersey. Jorgenson finished second on the day, but Roglič’s sixth-place finish secured his overall victory by a slim margin of 8 seconds.

Roglič’s victory at the Critérium du Dauphiné not only showcased his resilience and strategic acumen but also underscored BORA – hansgrohe’s strength and unity, setting an optimistic tone for the upcoming Tour de France.
