2024 Liège-Bastogne-Liège | Highlights

Race Report

Tadej Pogačar showcased his exceptional talent once again, claiming victory at Liège-Bastogne-Liège with a remarkable solo attack.

The decisive moment came at the Redoute, 34.8 km from the finish, where Pogačar launched his move. Supported by his teammates who set a punishing pace earlier in the race, Pogačar left the peloton behind, with only Richard Carapaz able to briefly match his acceleration before falling back.

As Pogačar powered on, his lead quickly grew to over a minute, leaving the chasing group, including Ben Healy, Romain Gregoire, Benoit Cosnefroy, and Romain Bardet, struggling to close the gap.

By the time Pogačar reached the Roche aux Faucons, his advantage had stretched to over two minutes on Bardet and the chasing pack, cementing his dominance in the race.

Crossing the finish line in Liège, Pogačar secured his second victory at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, finishing 1 minute and 39 seconds ahead of Bardet in second place, with World Champion Van der Poel taking third, over two minutes behind.

Reflecting on his win, Pogačar expressed his emotions, particularly remembering the challenges of the past two editions of the race. He dedicated his victory to his girlfriend Urska’s late mother and highlighted the importance of teamwork in achieving success.

With his eyes now set on the Giro d’Italia, Pogačar praised his team’s efforts and credited their strategy for his triumph at Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He emphasized the significance of being in safe positions throughout the race and executing their plan flawlessly, leading to a well-deserved victory for the UAE Team Emirates.

Pogačar’s triumph adds another milestone to his illustrious career, further solidifying his status as one of cycling’s premier talents.
