2024 Tour de France Stage 12 | Highlights

Report

Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) continued his extraordinary Tour de France journey with a third stage win, triumphing in a bunch sprint in Villeneuve-sur-Lot at the end of stage 12. This victory further cements Girmay’s status as the fastest sprinter in this year’s race.

The 200-kilometer stage saw Girmay perfectly positioned by his teammate Mike Teunissen, who executed a flawless leadout. Girmay surged ahead in the final meters to finish ahead of Wout van Aert and Pascal Ackermann.

In the points classification, Girmay extended his lead with 328 points, 107 more than his closest rival Jasper Philipsen, whom he also bested in the intermediate sprint. This latest triumph marks the ninth Grand Tour victory for Intermarché-Wanty and the twelfth win of the season for Girmay in the team’s colors.

Reflecting on his victory, Girmay said, “I’d like to thank my team-mates and the staff. Without them, I wouldn’t have been able to prove that I’m the fastest man on this Tour de France. I’m so proud of them. Over the last two weeks, I’ve proved that I can win any sprint if I’m in the right position. The confidence this green jersey gives me is indescribable. It’s the jersey I want to wear all the way to Nice.”

Girmay’s hat-trick of wins not only highlights his sprinting prowess but also showcases the strategic excellence of Intermarché-Wanty, making this Tour de France a memorable one for the team and its fans.
