2024 Tour de France Stage 20 | Highlights

Report

Tadej Pogačar continued his remarkable run in the 2024 Tour de France, securing his fifth stage victory on stage 19 from Nice to the summit of the Col de la Couillole. This win brings him closer to his third Tour de France title, complementing his earlier victory in the Giro d’Italia 2024.

The 132.8 km stage saw Pogačar and his direct rival, Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike), break away from the group of top riders with 4.3 km to go, responding to an acceleration by Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step). The duo caught up with the remaining members of the day’s breakaway, including Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) and Richard Carapaz (EF-EasyPost), with 2400 meters to the finish.

In the final meters, Pogačar and Vingegaard dropped the others, with Pogačar taking his 16th career stage win in the Tour de France. João Almeida also performed well, finishing sixth, 1’28″ behind.

With only the Monaco-Nice individual time trial remaining, Pogačar leads the general classification by 5’14″ over Vingegaard and 8’04″ over Evenepoel. Almeida holds fourth place, 16’45″ behind, with a 40-second advantage over Mikel Landa (Soudal-Quick Step).

Reflecting on his victory, Pogačar said, “I did enjoy this day very much, although it didn’t go as we expected. I’m really happy I got another stage win. Just one more day to go – the ITT. That one, I’m going to enjoy it too. I will just try to come safe to Nice. I hope I can enjoy the crowds.”

Pogačar praised his team for their excellent work and acknowledged the challenges faced by his rivals, particularly Vingegaard, who showed resilience and strength. As the Tour approaches its conclusion, Pogačar remains focused on maintaining his lead and celebrating his achievements with his teammates.
