2024 Tour de France Stage 9 | Highlights

Report

In a stunning display of endurance and strategy, Anthony Turgis claimed a historic victory on the 9th stage of the Tour de France, navigating the challenging white roads to secure his place in the race’s illustrious history. This win marks a monumental achievement for Turgis and Team TotalEnergies.

The 9th stage, spanning 199 km from Troyes to Troyes, featured 14 sectors of white roads, promising a day full of twists and an unpredictable finish. Early attempts to break away were numerous, with Mathieu Burgaudeau among the initial attackers. However, the decisive breakaway formed later, including Turgis and nine other riders, eventually joined by two more.

Despite never gaining a significant lead over the peloton, which fragmented after the first white road sectors, the breakaway group maintained a slender but stable advantage. Turgis also claimed the intermediate sprint at km 83 in Fontette. The group worked well together, navigating the day’s challenges amidst the unique and dusty vineyard landscapes of Champagne.

With 12 km to go, Jasper Stuyven (Lidl-Trek) launched a solo attack. The remaining breakaway riders, including Turgis, relentlessly pursued him. After the flamme rouge, Stuyven was caught, setting up a thrilling finish. Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) and Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan Team) attempted attacks, but Turgis, biding his time, launched his sprint at the perfect moment to clinch victory.

In front of a large crowd in Troyes, Turgis celebrated the biggest win of his career and his first Grand Tour stage victory. Overwhelmed with emotion, he shared this monumental success with his family, teammates, and the entire Team TotalEnergies staff.

This stage win is the first for Team TotalEnergies since 2017, highlighting both individual brilliance and collective effort. Turgis’s triumph on this atypical and demanding stage underscores the team’s dedication and hard work.
