New Netflix Documentary Tour de France: Unchained will Launch June 8 | Trailer
Get ready to witness the drama and suffering behind the scenes of the Tour de France in Netflix’s latest documentary series, Tour de France: Unchained (or Tour de France: Au cœur du peloton in France). The eight-episode series, produced by Quadbox and funded by Netflix, follows eight teams at the 2022 Grand Boucle, capturing their emotions and struggles as they compete for overall success, stage victories, or simply to reach Paris.
But not all teams were willing to participate. Two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogačar and his UAE Team Emirates opted out, citing concerns about how the team and its sponsors would be portrayed. Nonetheless, they make brief appearances in race coverage and interviews, along with the other teams involved.
ASO, the race organizer, and host broadcaster France Televisions both netted €250,000 each, while Netflix covered the reported production costs of €8 million. The eight teams shared the remaining €500,000, which comes to a paltry €62,000 ($67,000) per team.
The series promises to provide a narrative approach to the competition, showcasing how the Tour de France represents the ultimate challenge for the competitors, with a focus on suffering, pushing limits, and team spirit. ASO managing director Yann Le Moënner hailed the series as part of their overall ambition to make the sport more accessible and attract a wider audience.
