In a display of sheer sprinting dominance, Tim Merlier of Soudal Quick-Step claimed his eighth victory of 2024 at the opening stage of the UAE Tour. The seasoned Belgian rider left no room for doubt this time, crossing the finish line with several bike lengths to spare, unlike last year’s tight photo-finish.
The stage, stretching from Al Dhafra Walk to Liwa, remained relatively tranquil until the final kilometers, where the pace surged on the wide roads leading to the finish. While crosswinds were anticipated throughout the day, they only made a decisive appearance in the closing stretch, challenging riders to time their moves effectively, especially as the road inclined in the last 500 meters.
Despite losing some of his lead-out support, Merlier maintained composure amidst the chaotic finale. As other sprinters launched their efforts prematurely, Merlier powered down the right side of the road, executing a breathtaking acceleration that saw him effortlessly surge past his rivals and secure a commanding victory. This triumph marks Merlier’s third win of the year, following successes at the Saudi Tour.
Reflecting on his performance, Merlier expressed satisfaction with his first victory in a World Tour race this season. “The UAE Tour is a prestigious event, and securing a win here is always special,” he remarked. “Although the race was chaotic, I trusted my instincts and chose the right moment to make my move within the final 500 meters. I had the confidence in my legs and the speed to make it count.”
Merlier’s triumph not only clinched him the stage victory but also propelled him into the overall and points classification lead. With this 14th victory donning the Soudal Quick-Step jersey, Merlier looks ahead with anticipation, already eyeing the next opportunities that lie ahead in the UAE Tour.
