2024 Tour de France Stage 11 | Highlights

Report

Jonas Vingegaard claimed a poignant victory on the 11th stage of the Tour de France, triumphing in a sprint finish against Tadej Pogacar after a grueling mountain stage. This marks Vingegaard’s fourth career stage win in the Tour and his first since recovering from a crash in the Itzulia Basque Country in early April.

The 211-kilometer stage from Évaux-les-Bains to Le Lioran featured a hilly start followed by four categorized climbs in the final 60 kilometers. On the Puy Mary, the group of favorites, including Vingegaard, reeled in the last escapees. Pogacar attacked on the steep slopes, gaining a 30-second lead by the base of the next climb, the Col de Pertus. Vingegaard, with support from Primoz Roglic, began the chase.

On the Col de Pertus, Vingegaard closed the gap to Pogacar, eventually joining him at the summit. The two riders then rode together towards the finish in Le Lioran. In a thrilling sprint, Vingegaard emerged victorious, showcasing his resilience and determination.

Reflecting on his win, an emotional Vingegaard said, “This win means a lot to me. Everything I went through in the past few months is now coming back. It’s a victory for my family. They have always been by my side.”

Sports director Frans Maassen praised Vingegaard’s performance, stating, “After the Puy Mary, it looked like we were going to have to limit the damage, but he did it. This win will definitely be among his best ever. The moment he joined Pogacar was actually a victory in itself, but he has exceeded it.”

Vingegaard’s victory not only highlights his personal triumph but also keeps the general classification battle wide open, with both he and Pogacar proving to be evenly matched. The fight for the yellow jersey continues as the Tour heads towards Nice.
