Cycling news and humor from industry veterans

Cycling is (nearly) back

We’re back from our week-long vacation. Did you even notice we were gone? Probably not – despite the break, June was somehow our biggest month ever. We’re more popular when we say nothing. Figures.

We haven’t wasted this time though. We have wasted this time vaping, playing PlayStation, and watching weird movies with Aubrey Plaza in them. Oh yeah, and we wrote BLACK LIVES MATTER in pavement chalk outside the Cyclry HQ. So far, so good, despite the fact that there’s a car with a Thin Blue Line bumper sticker permanently parked outside.

It’s been a well-earned break before everything hits the fan. Pro cycling is about to return!

What We Did in June

Did you notice some protests? – We blacked out the site for a day, and here’s our reasoning. We also shared a piece of writing about the difficulties of expressing, understanding, and challenging racial dynamics as an outsider. And we wrote about Fuji’s swift response.

Tech – We published our review of HR2VP, which gives you virtual power from any heart rate monitor. Pointless social distancing service Sodisp launched. We shared our first look at the new Garmin Edge 130 Plus and Garmin Edge 1030 Plus. And we put together the most comprehensive reveal of the Hammerhead Karoo 2 available anywhere.

Old stuff and Reminiscences – There was nothing else to write about, so we delved into the archives. H’s fledgling career as a television pundit came to an abrupt end with this joke, which upset the Yanks. In similar news, minor irritations become major annoyances when you broadcast every race on the calendar. Finally, there’s the time we went to Macclesfield for a cross race and realized that journalism isn’t as glamorous as we hoped.

Essays – Besides that Ta Nehisi Coates thing, we wrote about female bodybuilding to conclude the Who Can Play series. It’s related to our bigger projects on doping in cycling and issues of race and gender in sports.

Real life stuff – We made Cyclry face masks. We’re not selling them, but we might wear them to bike races. Or just the grocery store.

And What’s Coming Up

Cycling’s coming back!

Remember when Australia was on fire? That was this year. We were there for the season openers Toward Zero Race Torquay and Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

We have a fleeting feeling that those are the only major races we’ll actually make it to this year though, what with nobody wanting to let Americans travel anywhere anymore (a sensible policy, even when there’s not a hopelessly mismanaged pandemic). But we’ll be writing about everything from afar.

That means race previews, like we used to get paid to make. Plus race reports and things we’re refusing to call memes.

It also means a return to our hastily canceled podcast. Expect to hear us chatting pre-race, post-race, and more.

Covid fucked us, but now cycling is back. And so are we.
