Pocket Outdoor Media Acquires World’s Last Remaining Publications, Then Rebrands
Pocket Outdoor Media, who you’ll probably know as the parent company for Bicycle Retailer and VeloNews, has added yet more properties to its seemingly endless series of acquisitions.
The latest news is that POM has purchased Outside magazine, a purchase which came with Peloton magazine and BikeReg as free gifts. And actually a whole bunch more, with POM’s acquisitions set to “significantly expand the scope of its audience and range of services provided to customers and partners”:
- Outside Integrated Media, the iconic producer of award-winning adventure content and home to Outside magazine, Outside Studios, and the travel business Outside GO.
- Outside TV, the foremost provider of outdoor lifestyle TV and video programming across cable, satellite, and over-the-top networks.
- Gaia GPS, the leading mobile mapping and navigation application for backcountry adventurers and professionals.
- athleteReg, one of the world’s largest event registration platforms serving runners, triathletes, cyclists, and skiers.
- Peloton magazine, a highly respected source of inspirational storytelling and photography about the sport of cycling.
And to tie it all together, Pocket Outdoor Media has changed its name. It’s now Outside, effective immediately. Buy the thing, change your name to the thing. It’s what Cyclry is planning to do with Cycling Weekly once our diarrhea jokes hit critical mass.
Pocket Outdoor Media Outside now owns just about every outdoor activity related media property you can imagine. It all falls within their subscription program, Active Pass. They sent us info about that, but it was boring. We’d bet that you pay a monthly subscription and get to access everything.
Here’s the press release. We only read the first bit.
As a small independent outdoor sport publisher, we’re naturally concerned about this Disnification of our industry. We firmly stand against capitalist homogeneity of culture. To be blunt, it fucking sucks.
Join us on the barricades… until Outside adds us to their collection. Our price is $1M. Um, $100k? Amazon gift card? Look, just give us a call, Robin.
