Alex Dowsett Retires
Alex Dowsett has retired. The writing has been somewhat on the wall, but he recently indicated that he intended to race for two more seasons. He has since changed his mind, and retired with immediate effect.
Note his choice of words, however: he has retired from the World Tour. Cycling may still be in his future. Hell, he might not even have to change teams next year.
We still remember him as the young lad who signed for Team Sky and immediately turned up at our office driving a new Jaguar. Which means we’re officially old.
Dowsett’s career has been impressive. He’s a six-time national time-trial champion, a two-time stage winner at the Giro, held the UCI Hour Record, and won a Commonwealth Games gold medal. He also won the London Nocturne. We remember cheering for him at that one.
Impressively, that illustrious palmares was completed while suffering from haemophilia–the only able-bodied elite sportsperson with the condition. He started the charitable foundation Little Bleeders in 2016, supporting young people with bleeding disorders and encouraging them to use cycling or swimming to manage their conditions.
Chapeau, Alex. A good career.
