In response to the spread of the coronavirus the Hungarian government has declared a state of emergency. This prohibits the organization of mass events and makes it impossible to organize international events. Tejay van Garderen has retired from the Paris-Nice and returned to the US, citing the new travel ban on Europe imposed by the US. Being unwilling to become indefinitely separated from his family due to the COVID-19 crisis, Van Garderen did not start Stage 5 this morning. This is a tough decision. Stage 5 of Paris – Nice was a lumpy route skirting around the foothills of the Massif Central and was the longest stage the riders will face at this year’s race.
