Backstage at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race

Alright, we’re doing this again. We’re in Victoria for the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, easily one of the best races this side of Omloop.

One thing you can say about Cadel is that he’s really given back to the sport in Australia. The Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race is just one example.

We were there for the Women’s race, the Men’s race, and the free beige food in the Mapei VIP area. Here are our thoughts.

Prawn Sandwiches in the VIP area

Great to see the iconic Mapei kit getting an airing out. Can we just make this the World Champions jersey or something? Can we make everybody wear this?
Congrats on making the food table look less appetizing than the Mapei kit, guys.
Little Creatures Pale Ale. Why would anybody choose anything else? They must only have offered a choice as a way to weed out the weak.
This picture makes us want to buy some Mapei brand chemical sealing products for our building projects.
Eddy.
Don’t wear this. You’ll regret it.

The Women

Rider sign-on. This is Marieke van Witzenburg.
The Rally team in Euskaltel orange.
What is this, a team presentation for ants?
Oh, that’s better.
Ruth Winder. She’s good.
The weather was really bad. Here’s the evidence: mudguards! In a race! In Australia!
No didgeridoos this time.

The Men

Bloodbag Gang. Looks like a nice day out there!
Cadel back in the prestigious yellow Vegemite jersey. Wonder if he’s decided which wheel he’s going to follow in this race? Pink helmet looks the fastest for us.
Finally some Scouse representation at these races. We haven’t seen Terry since he shouted something at us at Revolution with a mouthful of red wine.
Dries Devenyns won. Here he is giving an interview on a plastic table.
And here’s his prize. Look, he’s in the background.
Are these cuter than the rabbits from the Race Torquay? It’s close. It’s also very cool that they’re accessorized with eucalyptus leaves.
And finally, the race-winning bike. You’d think they’d have more graceful ways of putting numbers on the backs of bikes in 2020.

Watch – Highlights

Here are the highlights of the women’s race. We didn’t make this. We don’t do that anymore.
