Davide Rebellin to Retire Aged 51
Davide Rebellin is still racing, and will continue to do so until the end of the season, when he’ll finally retire aged 51.
You may remember Rebellin from such mid-2000s controversies as being stripped of his Olympics silver medal, and pretending to be an Argentinian to get a ride at the Worlds when he didn’t make the Italian squad.
You may also not remember those things, because they were at least 14 years ago. You may not have even been born then (and if not, here are some words you’ll enjoy: Fortnite, Among Us).
It hasn’t all been bad for the Italian. Highlights of his career include victories in Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Paris-Nice, and Tirreno-Adriatico. And in 2004, he–remarkably–won all three Ardennes Classics.
Unfortunately (or, really, fortunately), he tested positive for CERA after the Beijing Olympics way back in 2008. He was stripped of his silver medal and banned for two years.
His return to the peloton briefly saw some fairly strong results, before he quietly slipped into relative anonymity at smaller teams. In fact, you probably thought he’d retired already.
Now he’s finally retiring. Unless he changes his mind between now and the end of the season.
