Cycling news and humor from industry veterans

The Continent is on Fire, and I Must Race

The 2020 cycling season kicked off this weekend with the Lexus of Blackburn Bay Crits in Geelong, Victoria. Yes, 2020. Yes, we remember being there for the 2015 edition. Yes, it felt recent enough that it was in our header image until we redesigned the site last month.

And yes, it’s in Australia. Which is on fire. This is a sport that doesn’t get stopped by snow or active volcanoes, but still. Even if not for the sake of your lungs, take a break from the cycling out of respect for the half billion animals that’ve just died.

Alright, we’ll get on with it

It was the first edition with rain. Probably ever. It’s Australia, remember.

Our mate Phil was there as usual. We won’t hear a bad word against him, even though he left a dirty coffee mug on our desk one time when he was commentating at Cycling.TV.

The start/finish line. You might remember this from our Instagram story. We’re not good at posting things on Instagram right now. Sorry.

Some start line pictures. You know what makes cycling—already a pretty boring spectator sport—even less exciting? Photos of pro cyclists not actually riding. You are welcome!

Hey that sounds like Matt Keenan on vox with Phil. Neat!

Traditional women’s cycling commentary tactic: just talk about how long is left until the men start racing.

Spoiler warning: if you’re avoiding the results, close your eyes and scroll down a few pixels.

OK, you can open your eyes again.

If you’re in the part of the Venn diagram that actually closed their eyes and can recognize fairly obscure Aussie cyclists from a small photograph, then we’ve spoiled the result for you anyway. Liverpool beat Everton today too. You know, while we’re spoiling things. Doesn’t Phil look fit in this photo?

That’s it

Hard to imagine we used to write about cycling for a living.
