Trek has recalled its Bontrager Satellite City pedals because they can fall off if not installed correctly. That, uh, is true of every pedal ever created, but fortunately they’ve clarified the problem in more depth for the pedants among us.
That clarification is “Satellite City pedals require a multi-directional torque wrench to properly secure them to the crank arm. If the pedals are not properly installed on the bicycle during assembly, the pedal can fall off the crank arm. If this happens while riding the bicycle, you could lose control of the bicycle and fall.”
Ok then. Trek has sold nearly 350,000 Satellite City pedals, and they’re recalling every single one. So far, they’ve had 132 customer complaints, and that number will only rise now they’ve acknowledged the problem.
Think you’re affected? The concerned pedals have “ZTR02” molded onto the axle side of each pedal body. Trek kids’ platform pedals are not affected. You can also go to a Trek dealer and have them inspect to determine whether you have the recalled pedals. If you DO have them, Trek says not to ride with them. And since they’ve said it, it’s slightly harder for you to sue them if you do have a crash – trust us, we’re lawyers. This constitutes legal advice.
Here’s what they look like.

Christ. If you had something this ugly on your bike, you’d want it to detach.
Anyway. Trek will replace your pedals and install new ones. There’s probably some class action lawsuit fun for you to get into further down the line too.
