Report Yves Lampaert stormed to victory on stage 1 of the Tour de France, a flat but rain-soaked 13.2km individual time trial, beating a host of specialists on his way to the prestigious Tour de France yellow jersey and making it five years in a row that a Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl rider has worn the iconic tunic. “It’s incredible, I didn’t expect this and I don’t understand how it happened. Welcome to Cyclry University’s class of 2022. I’ll be your adjunct professor, Jessica. The Tour de France is an historic event with complex tactics, unspoken rules, and ways of measuring victory that may be unfamiliar to fans of other sports. The world inhales. Ten thousand fans draw silent for a split second as the race leader rises into view, frozen like poetry on the Alpine pass. Everything is still. Then chaos erupts. In France, they call it La Grande Boucle. In America, we call it “Hey ain’t that Tourday France the thing Lance Armstrong won? By the way can you look at my bike, I think it has a flat tire.” It’s the most wonderful time of the year and we can’t wait to spend it with you. Coming at you from Copenhagen, some skinny men on bikes. We don’t have anything funny to say about it really. We once got yelled at for yelling ‘dope cheat’ at Lance Armstrong at a team presentation in the 2000s, but on reflection that behavior was a little uncouth (though, it turned out, factually accurate). Covid is absolutely laying waste to the team sheets right now. And it probably will continue to do so even after the race starts. For now, the people in the video are still in the race. We think. We hope.
