Tom Dumoulin’s on-again-off-again relationship with the sport looks to be set to ‘off’ for good. The Dutch rider has announced his intent to retire at the end of the 2022 season, with a statement on his Instagram page. Dumoulin boasts a palmares that includes nine grand tour stage wins, a Giro d’Italia overall victory, and a World Time Trial Championship. He may yet add to it before he retires, with the Worlds in Australia being his final target for the season. Good luck, Tom. Find a hobby that makes you happy.

It’s been an emotional rollercoaster ride. Yet, also one that can be summed up in a few words: Biniam Girmay made history on stage 10 of the 2022 Giro d’Italia, then 15 minutes later fired a champagne cork into his own eye on the victory podium. He will not make the start line of the 11th stage of the Giro d’Italia Santarcangelo di Romagna.
