With both the spectacular Passo Falzarego and Passo Valles on the menu yesterday, the second stage of the 2021 Haute Route Dolomites certainly kept riders on their toes. This 135km stage from Cortina d’Ampezzo to Trento saw riders climb over 3000m over the course of the day.The GC battle kicked into high gear with Frenchman Loic Ruffaut taking the stage win over Marco Rodero Prada, closing the GC gap to just one minute. Mathilde Terrasson from France took the women’s stage win over Magali Krawiec and Mathilde Flandinet.
Britain has produced some of the best female Olympic cyclists of all time, including Elinor Barker, Laura Kenny and Victoria Pendleton, to name a few. However, 42% of women in the UK still don’t feel safe cycling on the roads with 41% feeling vulnerable and having no confidence. Surprisingly, the green city of Brighton fared the highest with 50% of women feeling unsafe cycling on the roads, followed by Bristol (48%), Southampton (46%) and Plymouth (45%). XTERRA Nouvelle Aquitaine switched it up for the fourth and finalstop of the XTERRA Short Track season. Introducing a new format which involved two stages, athletes first had to qualify in the full distance the day before. The first stage of the Short Track involved a 400m swim in the Lac de Cadie, followed by an all-out 1.5km run. After the short but sweet stage in the morning, elite athletes then got ready to attack from the off with a 7km bike and 1.8km run around the village of Pujols that afternoon.Perfect weather conditions with blue skies set the stage for the women’s race, who were ready to race amongst the old churches and vineyards of the Bordeaux region. The 10th edition of the Haute Route Alps came to a thrilling finish on the shoreline of Nice yesterday after seven punishing days riding through France’s finest roads. Antonio Garnero topped the men’s results to hold onto the top General Classification position over Loic Ruffaut. Luise Valentin beat Lisa Bowyer to complete her clean sweep of the women’s stage wins and top the women’s GC standings.
XTERRA France Nouvelle-Aquitaine is back for a second edition on August 28th-29th, after hosting its first full distance race in 2020. Loic Ruffaut topped the mens results, with Garnero Antonio coming in second. Danish rider Luise Valentin beat Lisa Bowyer to the finish line to take the women’s stage win, extending her GC lead. Tomorrow the peloton will take on the Queen Stage of the 2021 event, riding a legendary 182km course with 4700m+ of elevation over some of the finest climbs in the Alps.
