#tbt – Peter Kennaugh vs. Graham Webb (2009)

It was Former World Champion vs Future World Champion in an embarrassing public misunderstanding on the British Cycling website. We’re sure there was no malice, only victims of the nuance of a newly-ubiquitous communications platform.

Graham Webb passed in 2017. He was National and World Champion, and an inductee into the British Cycling Hall of Fame in 2009.

DAY 3 – WORLD ROAD CHAMPS – Peter Kennaugh 4th in Under 23 Road Worlds

Comments still kind of visible.

Graham_Webb:
I watched the under 23 race live on Belgian TV and saw Peter at work gaining what must be the most agonizing and ungrateful position in a worlds, 4th. Congratulations to Peter and It was clear that he was well trained and prepared for the race but he did too much needless chasing and work at the front; he still has an awful lot to learn about reading a race. Having said that he could have done with some team mates to help close those gaps. And remembering to eat on each lap is not all that important in a one day race, remembering to save your efforts is.

p_kennaugh:
ok graham webb, firts of all you watched the worlds on belgian tv WOW u must be cool. eating is not important in a one day race, u must have some experience as a bike rider!!! , did too much needless chasing , I sat in all race got in a break with two laps to go and tried to promote it, jumped across to the break on the last lap because i missed the split on the flat, because i was triying to save my energy and gamberling that it wouldnt split. on the final climb i gave it everything with my whole body full of GO bars and got away from the group but wasnt good enough to go with the 3 leaders end of and i finished 4th, long story short you know nothing about cycling, as you would have realised my teamates were there for me the whole race getting me bottles and keeping me well postioned, sorry graham but you are just another critic who thinks they know what they are on about, when you are just sat at home on your couch with your head in the clouds thinking of all the negatives and are completely oblivious to actually what is going on, regards peter.

Graham_Webb:
Sorry Peter, I thought that you had read my congratulations on your very well earned 4th place and praised you for your preparation. I do happen to know a bit about road racing and was only trying to help you and all those others that may follow in your footsteps. Belgian TV only broadcast the last 4 ½ laps of your race so I can’t commentate on what the team did for you in the earlier parts of the race, but I did see that in those crucial last laps you were left to do all the work on your own. The first three to cross the line were very strong but I’m convinced that if you had used your head a bit more than your legs you would have been on that rostrum; you were worth at least silver and with a bit of luck gold! Peter I know your name very well as I’ve been following you for some time now, but sadly it’s very clear that you have never heard of me.

412388:
Graham, your comments are hardly constructive, Peter is a very talented rider who has just given everything for his 4th place. Just not required, seems we all have an awful lot to learn!! Peter, congratulations, great ride and result – it won’t be long before your time comes. Being so talented and performing well is going to lead to “expert” review from many. All you need to do is concentrate on the bike, not responding to this, no-one cares about it. Good Luck 🙂

Graham_Webb:
412388, at least you have the luxury of knowing that my name is Graham. I thought that my opening line was very clear and that I congratulated Peter on his 4th place? I also know how talented he is.

Graham_Webb:
Thanks ‘oldmaa’ but if they think they know it all that’s their loss not mine.
